Berndt, Bayard

Bayard Berndt, a Delaware artist (1908-1987), studied with N. C. Wyeth, Thorton Oakley, Frank Schoonover, Gayle Hoskins and other students of Howard Pyle, the founder of the Brandywine School.  He painted many local Delaware scenes such as Rockland Mills, Smith’s Bridge, the New Castle Courthouse and Hagley’s Tavern – all of which he knew well, and painted in different season in different light and color.  As a historian and illustrator he recreated scenes such as Washington and his troops crossing the Market Street Bridge over the Brandywine River, Christmas in New Castle in 1750, Lafayette’s headquarters in Chadds Ford and sleigh races in Newark, Delaware.  He also painted scenes in nearby Pennsylvania and Maryland.  He directed and taught at the Wilmington Academy of Art for many years.  His paintings are in the collections of Hotel DuPont, Wilmington Trust, Delmarva Power, University of Delaware, Avon as well as private collections.
